Indoor video walls
COB vs SMD LED Displays: A Buyer’s Comparison
COB and SMD describe different LED packaging approaches. Compare the finished display at the same viewing distance, operating brightness and project scope instead of treating either label as a complete quality rating.
Understand what the labels describe
SMD uses surface-mounted LED packages on a circuit board. COB, or chip-on-board, places LED chips directly on the board and uses a protective surface system appropriate to the design. Neither term alone establishes pixel pitch, color performance, environmental protection, warranty or repair cost. Ask which exact module construction and surface treatment is included, then evaluate the finished wall.
Compare the application before the packaging
Our VisiGuard range is positioned as a COB fine-pitch indoor video wall. InnoLux is a rental range whose technical table identifies SMD LED configurations. These are different product applications, so a direct price comparison without matching the brief can mislead. A meeting room may prioritize close-viewing detail and front access; an event inventory may prioritize repeated handling, transport and flexible layouts.
Use your own content in a demonstration
Show presentation text, spreadsheets, dark backgrounds and video at the proposed wall size and expected operating brightness. Stand at the nearest and off-axis seats. Compare small-text legibility, reflections, uniformity and low-brightness behavior. If the wall will appear on camera, test the actual camera workflow. Avoid concluding that a technology is universally flicker-free or moiré-free from a marketing label.
Investigate servicing and surface care
VisiGuard lists front maintenance and 600 × 337.5 mm or 600 × 675 mm cabinets with a 39.75 mm depth. Confirm module removal clearance, mounting depth, replacement procedures and any specialist repair requirements. Surface cleaning methods and impact tolerance depend on the specific product. Obtain the manufacturer’s care instructions rather than assuming every COB or SMD panel can be cleaned or repaired in the same way.
Compare ownership cost using a matched specification
Request the final native resolution, controller, mounting arrangement, spares, support and delivery scope for each proposal. Confirm the warranty and replacement-module strategy in writing. If a supplier claims an energy or durability advantage, ask for model-specific evidence and test conditions. The right choice is the one that meets the application with an acceptable service plan, not the one with the longest list of technology abbreviations.
Questions that make a COB/SMD comparison useful
| Decision | Compare on the finished wall |
|---|---|
| Image detail | Same physical size, native resolution and representative content |
| Environment | Intended location, operating brightness and model-specific protection |
| Maintenance | Access, replacement method, care instructions and spares |
| Commercial scope | Controller, mounting, support, warranty and freight |
Check the model-specific specifications

Frequently asked questions
Is COB always better than SMD?
No. Packaging is one part of the design. Compare the actual products against viewing requirements, installation conditions, maintenance and total project scope.
Does VisiGuard have front access?
The supplied VisiGuard technical table lists front maintenance. Confirm module-removal clearance and the complete mounting arrangement for your wall.
Make it specific to your project.
