Outdoor LED Display Brightness: How Much Do You Need?
Choose outdoor LED brightness for the actual site, then plan how it will be controlled through the day. The highest available number is not a complete visibility specification or a suitable nighttime setting.
Start with what the site looks like
Describe the screen orientation, direct sun, shade, surrounding light, viewing angles and operating hours. Share site photographs taken at different times where possible. Large advertising graphics and detailed public information can place different demands on contrast and readability. A generic brightness recommendation cannot replace assessment of the actual location and content.
Understand the unit and the model figure
Display luminance is commonly stated in cd/m², also called nits: 1 nit equals 1 cd/m². EcoBeam’s source table lists brightness ≥6500 cd/m². Outdoor InnoLux variants list 4500–5000 cd/m², while indoor variants have different values. These figures describe different configurations and applications; do not substitute one for the other or assume that the table value is the recommended operating setting for every site.
Evaluate visibility rather than brightness alone
Compare representative content in conditions relevant to the installation. Consider reflections, contrast, viewing angle and the size of text as well as emitted light. A wall facing strong sunlight may behave differently from one shaded by a building. Request confirmation of the quoted configuration and, when practical, a demonstration or site assessment rather than choosing solely from the highest catalogue figure.
Plan dimming and night operation
Discuss scheduling, ambient-light sensing, controller compatibility and the way brightness limits will be configured and maintained. Ask which control components are included instead of assuming automatic dimming is standard. Requirements for sign brightness and operating hours vary by location; have the project team confirm the applicable local conditions. This guide does not prescribe a universal nighttime setting or state that one model meets every jurisdiction’s rules.
Connect brightness to power and thermal planning
Electrical demand and heat vary with content, brightness, hardware and operating conditions. EcoBeam lists 186/500 W/m² average/maximum consumption, but the average is not a guarantee for every site and the final supply design needs appropriate engineering. Confirm ventilation, service access, dimming setup and operating assumptions in the proposal. Send the location, wall dimensions and daytime/nighttime schedule for a configuration discussion.
Your project checklist
- Screen orientation and direct-sun exposure
- Daytime and nighttime site photos
- Viewing distances, angles and typical content
- Operating hours and local restrictions to confirm
- Required dimming controls, included equipment and power design
Check the model-specific specifications
Model figures in this guide come from the linked catalogue pages. Confirm the selected configuration and current datasheet before ordering. Calculations are illustrative, not installation drawings or guaranteed operating results.
Frequently asked questions
How bright is EcoBeam according to the catalogue?
The supplied technical table lists ≥6500 cd/m². Confirm the exact quoted configuration and operating settings for your installation.
Is a brighter LED display always the better choice?
No. Match visibility, contrast and dimming to the location and operating hours. Higher output alone does not resolve every readability or nighttime-operation issue.
Make it specific to your project.
Share your screen size, application and destination. You do not need a complete specification to start.
